Hi Danny

Strange coincidences! I was in a children's hospital with a horribly strict matron -- I had nightmares about her for ages. When I woke from the anaesthetic, I found she had tied my hands to the bed with bandages in case I fiddled with the dressing ... this would probably be classed as child abuse now!

Hi Veronica,

It seems we have at least three things in common!

Languages were my best subjects at school and I got me best overall result in Spanish (only a B as I was also a lazy sod). I disliked Latin but it has stood me in good stead over the years for the reasons you mention.

Aged 10 I had a burst appendix and was diagnosed late by our local village GP. Caused a bit of a scare, just like your incident. Three weeks in the male ward (not children) was a bit of an eye opener for a 10 year old, especially my first contact with a dementia sufferer.

I used to be an avid reader and devoured the entire 12 volumes of the old Childrens Brittanica. Local kids would ask me for the answer to most everything, which was embarrassing as I was the shyest kid in the village (back then) :-)

Stephanie: It's such fun to discover things we have in common with people we've never met!

Ivy: I'm *so* glad someone agrees with me about Latin! It has proved useful in so many ways, some far from obvious -- e.g. computer programming, which has the same requirements as Latin for logic and exact syntax if you don't want your meaning to be completely distorted! My husband gets fed up of me saying (in answer to many different questions), "If you'd done Latin at school you'd have known that!"

But I also loved it for the poetry I read (being in a class of one meant racing through the official syllabus, then visiting the library and reading other stuff for pleasure). Just don't mention Cicero in my presence :-)

Hey, thanks for tagging me. :)
I only took one year of Latin in 7th grade and then moved to another school that didn't offer Latin. BUt, even that little that I took has helped me throughout my life. You couln't have said it better in #1.
I REALLY want our future kids to take Latin their whole lives. Some argue it's a dead language so what's the point?
But I think it's the root of all language and enhances your eduction by leap and bounds.

Holy Cow, are you me? I took Spanish in High School and Russian in college, and have forgotten most of what I learned in both. I love cats too, and they tend to like me. I don't like riding bikes, I much prefer walking or driving. I love singing harmony, and music is a huge part of my life. And I love books! I had no idea we had so much in common, that's so cool!

Hi and thanks for the tag. The only problem is I've already done this one -- and in fact it was TEN random things, so that was a lot of work! I'll give you the link, though, in case you want to do some sort of follow-up...and then you can read my take on it anyway.

The BookMooch site looks interesting -- I'll have to check that out.

I somehow lost you from my Google Reader but hope to follow your blog more closely now!

Take care,
